Examining Gener, Race and Body Image in a Virtual World

I started exploring Secondlife's virtual worlds with a  white blond haired male in a suite and tie to give the image of a business man. I explored two worlds with this avatar in Penn State Isle and also London City. I received similar interactions with other users in both worlds. Some were new to the application and were asking for help. Others were asking additional information about me. I made sure to keep my answers to a minimum dealing with personal information…

I chose to be a robot and explore Bay city. No one was interested in talking to me and I flew around and exploited the world. More people seem interested when I was an actaul human.

Lastly, I went into London city as a lion. The same scenario was going on as before with the robot. I was getting ignored. Some may think I am a younger user due to my character.

Final, Adding 5 PDF Files

I added 5 PDF files onto one object. I chose to upload 5 different Boston College PDF files. They consist of campus maps, rosters, handbooks.

Final, Adding 10 New Content

Added a video as well as a photo

Added a youtube video

Added another Youtube video about immersive education

Added a photo of the Boston College logo

Made an area to put 5 different pieces of contact together. They all bring you to different websites such as agora, gmail, immersive education, etc.

Final, Testing Classmates Libraries

I choose to visit Sam's Library. It was very creative and well organized. I enjoyed the videos that were playing in the back as you were walking around the world

I then visited Jamie's Library. Jamie's was also well organized and easy to follow and understand. I enjoyed the video posted on the wall.

Lastly, I looked at Diana's library. My computer had a lot of trouble loading and following Diana's world and was force quitting me out every time so I was unable to get more than one picture and look at the whole world. From what I saw the world was perfect!

Final #4, High Resolution Avatar

Here is my original avatar and I am adjusting my height, age, body shape, race, etc.

I chose to give my avatar some clothes and put on jeans, button shirt, jacket, and brown shoes

I then gave my avatar some hair, eyebrows, eye lashes, etc. I tired to match up exactly how I view my features.

I wanted to bulk up my avatar so I gave him bigger arms, legs, torso, chest, etc. I did not do much because I want him to look like myself. The picture below shows me adjusting my torso.

Final #5c, My Customized Java Game

Here is my face as the snake and the IED symbol as the turtle. It feels go to get back at IED...

This is my game, Me and IED, posted on Greenfoot. You can find my link below.

Final #5b, Greenfoot Lettuce and Snake

These are the steps are used to get the lettuce and also the snake onto my game board.

Here is my first game with the turtle eating the lettuce.

I copy and pasted the whole coding for my turtle eating the lettuce and switched it with "turtle" where "lettuce" was stated. This allows the snake to go after and eat the turtle.

Here is what my game looked like while running.

Final #5a, 2D Java Video Game

I used green leaf and watched the tutorial on how to play and code trick the turtle. I went into the code for the movements of the turtle and changed how many steps the turtle takes and when to turn. Once I did that I had to compile the system so it could understand my command.

Final #2, Monocular Depth Cue

The ceiling walls gives the picture a lighting and shading monocular depth cue. The ceiling is bright for the majority of the world except for certain corners like this one. I could have chose another part of the world but this picture captures it the best.

This picture captures texture density. The floor and the mat are two different textures and can obviously been seen by the naked eye. There is also texture density on the walls but the floor is more straight forward.

The organ shows size difference. As you can see the organ goes up and down every other time. This was the only size difference I could find in this world.

Linear perspective is the monocular depth cue shown in the picture. The rows of seats are all the same height but as the rows move further away they look smaller. Both sides of the church show linear perspective.

Occlusion is shown in the picture. The coffin  looks as if it is against the wall when in reality it is a few feet away from the wall. This was the best example I could find in this world. The coffin stands out due to its bright white color against a brown/white wall.

Lastly, atmospheric perspective is shown in the picture. The small door on the wall stands out more than the paintings on the wall even though they are the same distance away.

Final Project: Building My Immersive Libraries/Museums

I started my world called Egremont with a picture of my blogger @ianpetri.blogspot.com. I made a cube shape with the website displayed on the outside.

This was the toolbar i used to make the website show up a lot better. This allows the user to follow my blog easier.

Within one of the objects I made, I put a picture of myself and two of my friends. I used a cube shape to post it to the wall and pasted my url. Unfortunately Facebook will not display the photo and only the webpage. Below is the selected picture...

I then used Facebook for my next two pictures by doing the same steps as before. These pictures also did not show up. This is of my dad and I

This is myself as a child with my cousin...

I decided to post a youtube video in the house. It is a music video of the Beatles presenting Penny Lane. The song seemed to go well with my world.

I made some 3D text that welcomes you into my world...

As you get deeper into my world, you will bump into another music video that plays a song named Jet Jive by Gramatik.

Immersive Libraries and Museums

I think that Immersive Education is on the right path to making their virtual Museums and Libraries a success. With the fast growing technology, more people will have up to date technology to be able to run virtual programs. The information would be up to date and updated almost instantaneously. Within their objectives, they state that they would make sure their information is always up to date. This will cut off time for people who enjoy going to libraries. They can go to a virtual library and find the same information as they would at their town library.

This does not mean that it will be a solo trip to a library or museum. Immersive Education states that group work can be due through virtual study. Our class this semester has witnessed that meeting virtually can be just as productive. This is why customizing our avatars is so important to show everyone else who we are, what we like, etc.

The Smithsonian LVM virtual Watershed community is a perfect example of how a community of people can work together to make a finished product. All different kinds of people were able to work on it together such as students, scientists, educators and museum professionals. Allowing a variety of intelligent individuals to work with one another allows the finished product to look professionally done.

Once certain bugs are figured out and more people are involved with virtual worlds, then this is a great idea. Personally, I would not use a virtual world for an education purpose due to the compatibly of my computer with the programs. Once I am updated and have all the necessary software, I would be interested in taking place in a build. It allows me to be creative while learning something new.

Class 9, Exploring Second Life

Above is the first Secondlife world I visited. It was called Penn State Isle. I was in the main area where a bunch of different users gathered. I could judge that some users were friends already while others were just greeting each other and getting to know them.

I visited another world called Heaven Gallery. There were not as many users but the creativeness that was put into the world was spectacular. I spoke with a selected few but got a lot of experience out if it.
